A West Nyack comedy club has canceled a comedian’s performance after he allegedly made disparaging comments about the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, Newsday has learned.
Levity Live canceled Paul Mooney’s 7 p.m. Sunday show after about 20 people walked out of the club Saturday night during his stand-up routine, a club manager told News12. The manager declined to give his name.
The club, located in the Palisades Center Mall, listed Mooney’s Sunday night performance on its website earlier in the day but pulled the show by afternoon.
“Paul Mooney last night at Levity Live said white people in Boston deserved what they got,” said a Twitter user.
Attempts to reach Mooney or club management by Newsday were unsuccessful.
The canceled show was the last of six appearances, including last night’s sold-out 9:30 p.m. show at the comedy club.
Mooney has a reputation as an African-American comic who pushes the envelope of propriety, especially on racial issues.
“Paul Mooney is one of the most dangerous and brilliant comic minds of our time. This is not a show for those considered easily offended,” says a bio of the comic from Caroline’s On Broadway, a Manhattan comedy venue.
Beginning his career as a writer for Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx and “Saturday Night Live,” Mooney also appeared regularly on the popular “Chappelle’s Show” on Comedy Central.
The club was accepting donations to help the Boston victims before the show, the club manager told News12. Audience members who left the show in disgust were given refunds, he said.
TBS has found its game show hosts. Comedians D.L. Hughley and Michael Ian Black have come on board Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host, one of the cable network’s several unscripted efforts set to debut in 2013.
“This is a game show where a host is legitimately trying to convince a contestant to choose the wrong answer,” said EP Mark Burnett of One Three Media and London-based Monkey. “D.L. and Michael’s comedic styles are perfect for pulling this off. The comedy itself will be must-see television.”
Facing of against each other, Hughley and Black will each present a single contestant with a strange fact. One will be lying and one will be telling the truth, and the contestant must choose the correct statement to win.
“It’s great to have D.L. Hughley and Michael Ian Black on board for TBS’s Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host,” said TBS, TNT and TCM president and head of programming Michael Wright. “They possess the comedic instincts, sharp improvisational skills, sense of fun and easygoing charm necessary to earn the trust of contestants in this clever, one-of-a-kind game show from Mark Burnett, Will MacDonald and David Granger.”
Hughley recently wrapped a turn on the 16th season of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, and Black appears in the web series/E! comedy Burning Love.
Hughley is repped by ICM; Black is at UTA.
This is a pretty funny animated documentary on how Chris Rock was discovered in a comedy club in NYC by Eddie Murphy. The original story was covered by Dylan Gadino for Laughspin.com:
Hardcore comedy nerds already know the story of how Eddie Murphy basically discovered Chris Rock, while the young comedian was working at the Comic Strip on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. But this stellar animation from TWIRI Sports brings new life to the tale– and exposes those to may not have heard the story to a truly inspiring reality.

This may be the strangest duo to hit the booth together in the history of recorded music. Jerry Seinfeld and D.C. rapper Wale are teaming up on Jerry’s next album. From Laughspin.com’s Dylan Gadino:
Having conquered the world of stand-up comedy, sitcom television and, most recently, Web series, it makes sense that Jerry Seinfeld would embark on another journey to further his artistic reach. In a somewhat surprising move, however, it seems the iconic comedian is delving into the world of hip-hop. It’s totally true. With a little nudging from his wife, Jessica, the 58-year-old comic is set to collaborate with Wale, the well-respected Nigerian-American, on his upcoming Album About Nothing.
In 2008, Wale released The Mixtape About Nothing, which was filled with Seinfeld samples, lyrics and title track names inspired by Seinfeld episodes and an appearance from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played Elaine on Seinfeld. Check out Seinfeld talking about the collaboration below.
The most bizarre scandal of 2013 (so far) has everyone talking about Manti Te’o and his fake dead girlfriend. But only now do we know the true depth of the college football star’s imaginary relationship.
Funny Or Die explains everything in the new sketch above, featuring Te’o’s eHarmony commercial. Once you watch it, we think you’ll agree that he and Lennay are actually pretty cute together.
You can thank Tracy Morgan for preventing us from going over the now ubiquitous “fiscal cliff,” according to him that is.Morgan cracked up David Letterman on Friday night when he took credit for solving the financial crisis, although we have to say we’re a little skeptical about his explanation.”I hope everybody’s happy, because I did that; that was me,” he joked. “I was at the U.N. all night crunching numbers.” Check out the video below.
A wonderful year in comedy has come to an end and it has me excited about the new year and what the hilariously funny comedians from the “215” will have in store for me this year. I’m looking forward to the growth of some of the young comedians as well as the continued maturity of some of our seasoned vets. Below is a list (In no particular order) of the comedians that I will be watching for in 2013. I suggest that you take notice.
Jamal is ripping up stages on the West Coast. After making the leap to follow his dreams in Cali., Jamal is making a pretty good name for himself. Fresh off a supporting role in the movie “Streets” starring Meek Mill, Jamal’s career is starting to take off. Keep an eye out for him. Here’s a clip from Jamal’s appearance on Martin Lawrence’s First Amendment Stand Up.
Dave Temple’s subtle brand of comedy is starting to push its way to the forefront. Extremely funny and charismatic on stage and equally funny off stage, Dave has been performing all over the tri-state this year. Dave has one of the funniest sets that I was privileged to see this year. Check out a clip from Dave below.
A breathe of fresh air in the comedy world, there is only one way to describe this wonderful comedienne, silly! Just down right silly, but in the most positive way I can portray it. Shanell has wonderful energy on stage and that energy is relayed to her audiences. This year found Ms. Travis on almost every stage in Philadelphia and it only stands to get better from here on out. Enjoy some of Shanell’s work.
I’m a little biased on this one because he might be my personal favorite on the list. Extremely funny. That may be all that needs to be said. Watch out for this comedian, if you see him coming to your city, get the ticket while it’s still cheap. Check out Derek’s performance from Bill Bellamy’s “Who’s Got Jokes?”. I think you will notice the genius in his comedy.
The reigning “King of Comedy” for the city of Philadelphia. It wouldn’t be right if we weren’t keeping up with his marvelous career. TuRae continues to make moves on a grand scale, from The Atlantic City Comedy Festival to touring across the country with funny lady Sommore, TuRae continues to push forward and bring the audiences the funny every time he hits the stage. Check him out below.
Richie Redding is one very energetic comedian. He hits the stage full of energy and never lets up. Blessed with a gift to entertain all audiences, Richie has been performing all across the country in 2012. The entire country is starting to find out about this special comedian. Check him out.
Clint Coley has the best work ethic of any comedian I have seen this year. This guy has monthly shows in about three different states. That’s hustling! D.L. Hughley’s protege is fresh off his own one man comedy show “Stand and Deliver”, Clint is destined for great things in 2013.
The youngest comedian in the group, Anthony Moore has been at it for little more than a year. You would never be able to tell. An extremely witty young man, this stands out on stage. I’m guessing in a couple of years, Anthony Moore will be performing for much larger audiences. Check out Anthony Moore performing at the Legends of Comedy Comedy Show in Philadelphia.
Matt Black may be a comedic genius. He is a wonderful story teller as well as impressionist. On top of all that talent, he has good old fashioned jokes as well. Matt has the ability to do an entire show just off of his talent. Check out a clip of Matt below.
Topp may be the hardest working comedian in Philadelphia. This dude seems to be booked every night. If you seen him, then you already know. Topp Fliight will have you running around the room in laughter. If you haven’t seen him, he’s definitely on a stage near you, most likely right now! Check out this clip.
One of my personal favorites, Chris Cotton has been performing all throughout PA, NJ and NY. His brand of comedy will have you wanting to see him more often. Not only is Chris a rising stand-up comedian. Chris is a very talented writer and actor as well. He has produced several skits as well as acted in many and just like his shows, the skits are hilarious. Check out a clip of Chris below.

Troubled comedian Katt Williams targeted actor and fellow comedian Jamie Foxx during a recent stand-up gig, alleging that the actor is secretly gay and blasting him for taking a role in the racially-charged flick “Django Unchained.”While performing at a show in Los Angeles Williams told the crowd that Foxx is gay, according to RumorFix. “Who’s gay? Jamie Foxx,” said the comedian. “I can even tell you the name of the dude he f**ked. His name is Marcus Anthony; he’s the only dude signed to Jamie Foxx’s label.”Williams continued with a tirade against Foxx. “F**k Jamie Foxx and the ‘Django Unchained’ check he cashed,” he said. Adding, “They offered me the script and I said, ‘Any n***a that do this deserves to die. And the next thing I heard, Jamie Foxx was in makeup.
“Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” focuses on the story of a slave-turned-bounty-hunter (Foxx) who is freed from servitude and takes a job inflicting fierce revenge across the Deep South while searching for the wife who was separated from him and sold to a brutal plantation-owner. The N-word is used more than 110 times in the film.“We knew we had to go to a bad place and when I talked to black people about the film and they say they were bothered by the N-word, I said, ‘It’s supposed to, it’s supposed to bother you. Those horrific things that happened to us, is supposed to bother you,’” Foxx told NBC News.”Django” might not be the sole reason for Williams’ rant against Foxx.
The “9 Lives” comedian’s issues with Foxx date back more than four years, when Foxx instigated an alleged feud between Williams and comedian Steve Harvey.Williams’ behavior has become increasingly erratic over the past few months. From a bizarre on-stage meltdown and a false retirement announcement, to multiple arrests and alleged assault, Williams has been terrorizing the West Coast since November.
On Thursday night, Williams was detained by police in West Hollywood after some sort of “disturbance” in a Subway storefront, TMZ reported. The comedian claims the incident was racially motivated.
